ABS School Scholarships
THE DON HASTINGS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is awarded annually by the Order of the Mystic Brotherhood, a benevolent fraternal organization, dedicated to the preservation of the art of the forged blade. The award is in the amount of $600 to cover the actual cost of tuition and fees for the Handles & Guards or the Damascus Class. It is named in honor of Don Hastings, one of the founders of the American Bladesmith Society, Inc. who died of cancer in 1986. Applications are available from the Office of the Dean of Students at Texarkana College, and the final selections are made by a college scholarship committee.
Beginning in 2010 the scholarship was made available for use at either Texarkana College or Haywood Community College.

THE BLADE MAGAZINE SCHOLARSHIPS
This scholarship is funded by Krause Publications, the parent company of Blade Magazine. Two (2) $550.00 scholarships to cover the majority of the actual tuition costs are awarded for the Introduction to Bladesmithing Class. Applications are available from the Office of the Dean of Students at Texarkana College, and final selection is made by a college scholarship committee. Financial need and recommendations are the criteria for awarding this scholarship. This scholarship was first awarded in 1994.
ABS SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
A $500 scholarship is usually announced to be given to a paid attendee each year at the following ABS sponsored Hammer-Ins:
Great Smoky Mountain Hammer-In, Clyde, North Carolina
New England Bladesmithing Hammer-In, Auburn, Maine
Mid-America Exposition in Troy, Ohio funded by Southern Ohio Forge and Anvil
The recipient of this scholarship will be drawn from a hat at the named event. This scholarship can be used at the Moran School of Bladesmithing in Washington, Arkansas, Haywood Community College in Clyde, North Carolina, or the New England School of Metalwork in Auburn, Maine.
A $500 scholarship will be given to a paid attendee of the Batson Bladesmithing Symposium and Knife Show in Tannehill Ironworks State Park in McCalla, Alabama. The recipient of this scholarship will be drawn from a hat at the event. This scholarship can be used at the Moran School of Bladesmithing in Old Washington, Arkansas, the Campbell Folk Center in Brasstown, North Carolina or Haywood Community College in Clyde, North Carolina, at the choice of the recipient.
Scott Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund
This award shall be in the form of two scholarships at the Moran School of Bladesmithing at Texarkana College. One scholarship in the amount of $700 for the Introduction to Bladesmithing Class, and the other in the amount of $600 for the Handles and Guards Class. Family, friends and students of Scott Taylor, Master Smith, who was taken from us unexpectedly in December 2004, have established these awards. The Southern California Blades Knife Collectors Club Scholarship
The Southern California Blades Knife Collectors Club Scholarship award shall be in the form of three scholarships; each in the amount of $800 to be used for the Introduction to Bladesmithing courses at the ABS Bill Moran School of Bladesmithing. This scholarship is targeting potential knife makers/students between the ages of 18-25. Preference will be given to California residents on the awarding of the Southern California Blades Knife Collectors Club Scholarship. If no qualified candidates from California apply for the scholarship, all West Coast States and Rocky Mountain States candidates may apply and will be given consideration for this scholarship.
The Southern California Blades Knife Collectors Club established this new scholarship in November of 2008. The scholarship will be administered by Texarkana College and may be used for tuition to the selected Introduction to Bladesmithing course taught at the Bill Moran ABS, Texarkana College School of Bladesmithing at Washington, Arkansas. These scholarships are designed to make it possible for aspiring bladesmiths whom otherwise could not afford to attend these courses to do so. For ease of access, the application for this scholarship will be made available on-line in a downloadable PDF form.
Considerations in determining the recipients include income from all sources, motivation, age, and references. The major factors in determining eligibility of candidates will be the state of residency and meeting the age requirement of between 18-25 years of age. This application indicating the course desired (only one course per application) shall be completed and returned to the indicated address not later than March 15th, of each year.
The application must be completed in full and the recipient will be determined by the Scholarship Committee of Texarkana College, whose decision is final and cannot be appealed. The scholarship committee of Texarkana College will award the scholarship no later than May 15th, of each calendar year. Please note that incomplete applications will not be given consideration for a scholarship and shall be returned to the applicant.
