I use a rotating platen to do it; much more control in the 'vexing.
Or; put a standoff in the slack part of the belt to mack it much stiffer.

A slack belt has its place in knife grinding, but when you need a lot of control, you need some type of backing behind the belt.
Think a little bit. It doesn't have to be the hard platen, but it doesn't have to be slack, either.
Something in between.
