Cutting Demonstrations

Participate in the Cutting Demonstrations. Bring a sharp knife, 15” or less in length with a blade no longer than 10”. The handle should be pinned and have a safety lanyard.

For any one that would like to see how the complete knife is made using these integral jigs, I will be doing a demo at the Haywood Community College Hammer In this fall on Oct 20-21 in North Carolina. I will show you all the steps in getting the round bar forged, ground, and completed. I will also furnish a completed knife for the auction that is held on Saturday that is simular to the knife I will complete.
I do know that the economy is not the best and a lot of people may not attend due to financial reasons. All I can say is, get some buddies and share the ride and room. That is what I did and the travel time back was spent talking about what we learned. This reinforced my knowledge of what the class was about.
The techniques I use have been developed over the last 8 or 9 years and are not exactly the norm. It works for me and if I can show you how to save some time and increase your quality, it would be worth it.

I'm looking forward to our Fall Hammer in at Haywood College. In addition to Ray Kirk MS, we have Daniel Warren MS, Jim Batson MS, and Scott McGhee JS. Daniel is doing handles and guards. He will start with a finished blade and fit and finish a flowed in guard and handle. Scott will be doing forging and grinding. He will show how he grinds those beautiful clips on the bowies and choppers he is known for. Dr. Batson will do a heat treat demo. In addition, we are planning a cutting competition and auction. All this in two days!!! It's sure to be fun. Please join us if you are able.

Hello everyone. Scott McGhee here. I am a relatively new journeyman bladesmith who has been tasked with demonstrating forging and grinding techniques at the Haywood Fall Hammer-In.

I will be demonstrating forging from the point of view of a beginner with some pointers on how to keep a knife straight and deal with the plunge cut and choil area, and I will be demonstrating grinding with a focus on the way I grind my plunge cuts and clips.

There are no secrets to any of these techniques, but I'll be doing some things I've never seen others demonstrate in forging before, and I will try to demonstrate how the grinder sounds when working on a flat as opposed to a facet, as this is critical when doing clips. In addition, I will show how I use stereoscopic vision to examine my plunge cuts and false edges.

Hopefully all will go well, we'll have a knife to auction at the end of class, and we'll all learn something in the process.
