Well, I've been hunting for an affordable power hammer. Ideally, I would like to find a nice Little Giant 25# for under $3000. Apparently, they're in the same place as all the unicorns and honest politicians.
I obtained the plans for the Ray Klontz Tire Power Hammer, and I'm not sure I want to try to tackle construction all on my own. It does seem that there are a fair number of guys out there in the same position, wanting/needing a reasonably priced power hammer. I know that there have been group build seminars in the past, so I thought I would get a head count of all those interested in getting a hammer this way. I spoke with Clay Spencer about this and was told that unit cost would be in the $1000 range for parts. I'm not sure what total unit cost would be to have a shop facility and Mr. Spencer's help. I am told you need 15-20 guys building hammers to make this idea work out. Anybody besides myself interested?

I am, but it would have to be done in the NE for me to be able to pull it off.

My friend who works in metal fabrication took a look at the plans and believes he and I could build one, no sweat. Furthermore, Clay Spencer is going to be here at the Indiana Blacksmith Association Annual Conference June 1st, and he will have a tire hammer with him. I can gather lots more info on the building at that time.
On the other hand, I'm hot on the trail of a Little Giant 50# hammer as we speak.
