This knife is made using two different steels, 1080 and 15N20. I started with 13 pieces of 1080 1/8”x 1” x 4” long, and 12 pieces of 15N20 of the same size, stack them up one and then the other making 25 layers. I forge welded them together and shaped it into a bar 3/8” x 1 ½ x 16” long using a power hammer and a hydraulic press. The next step I cut the bar into 4 equal pieces, stack those up and forge weld them together making a bar 3/8” x 1 ½ 12”. The bar at this point has 100 layers. Then you cut the bar into 3 equal pieces, and forge weld them together. This bar has 300 layers.
The bar is then ground to shape, heat treated, and finished.
