Celebrate the Silver Anniversary

Of the

First American Bladesmith Hammer-In

At the Ranch of Burt Wiggins

In

DUBOIS, WYOMING

In 1984, the first of two ABS Hammer-Ins was held over a weekend at Trail Lake Ranch near Dubois, Wyoming. Dr. Leon Borgman, a metallurgist from the University of Wyoming, hosted the events.  Hanford Miller was instrumental in setting up the Bladesmithing Seminar. Later in the week, Dr. Borgman gave a tutorial on metallurgy.  The demonstrators were Bill Moran, Bill Bagwell, Don Hastings and the German trained blacksmith and engraver, Heinrich Frank. Margaret Moran gave a class to the knife makers wives on how to help your knife maker husband.

Future ABS Master Smiths, Hanford Miller, Larry Fuegen, Mick Langley and Dr. Dan Petersen were among the students. Art Swyhart  and future Journeyman Smith, Michael Rochford, also were there.

The Demonstrators for the celebration will be Master Smiths, Dan Petersen, Keith Kilby, Hanford Miller, Greg Neely, Rick Dunkerley,  Bert Gaston and James Batson.  Karen Miller will give Margaret Moran’s class for knife makers wives. Carolyn and Billy Ray Hughes who were unable to attend the first seminar will also teach.
