SCHOLARSHIPS



THE DON HASTINGS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

This scholarship is awarded annually by the Order of the Mystic Brotherhood, a benevolent fraternal organization, dedication to the preservation of the art of the forged blade. The award is in the amount of $600 to cover the actual cost of tuition and fees for the Introduction to Bladesmithing Class. It is named in honor of Don Hastings, one of the founders of the American Bladesmith Society, Inc. who died of cancer in 1986. Applications are available from the Office of the Dean of Students at Texarkana College, and the final selections are made by a college scholarship committee. Download application form

THE WILLIAMS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
These scholarships, in the amount of $200 are awarded to a student in each of the Handles and Guards classes. The awards are provided by Mr. Al Williams, an advanced knife collector. The recipient of each of these scholarships is selected by the other members of his/her class, including the instructors. No application is required. These scholarships are in memory of Margaret Brown Williams.

THE BLADE MAGAZINE SCHOLARSHIPS
This scholarship is funded by Krause Publications, the parent company of Blade Magazine. Two $550.00 scholarships to cover the majority of the actual tuition costs are awarded for the Introduction to Bladesmithing Class. Applications are available from the Office of the Dean of Students at Texarkana College, and final selection is made by a college scholarship committee. Financial need and recommendations are the criteria for awarding this scholarship. This scholarship was first awarded in 1994

The Al Barton Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is an award in tribute and in the memory of Al Barton, ABS Master Smith from California. This scholarship was made available by the efforts of Mr. Dave Ellis, ABS Master Smith from California, and the Barton family. Two $500 scholarships will be awarded fro the 2002 calendar year. Applications for scholarships may be requested by writing the Continuing Education office or by emailing a request to the Continuing Education office at shayes@tc.cc.tx.us This scholarship will follow the selection criteria listed below:

1. an applicant must be able to show financial need for assistance with tuition and fees; 2. special emphasis will be given to those students in the Western United States; and3. completed applications must be received by March 15, 2002 in the Continuing Education office of Texarkana College. Notification of scholarship awards will be mailed no later than April 1, 2002.

Scott Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund

This award shall be in the form of two scholarships. One in the amount of $700 for the Introduction to Bladesmithing Class. One in the amount of $600 for the Handles and Guards class. Family, friends and students of Scott Taylor, M.S. who was taken from us unexpectedly in December 2004, have established these awards.
